Like I said earlier, my sister is awesome. She went to BEAMS and picked me up exactly what I asked for. She said the service was great and everything was easy to find. I still felt badly for asking her to do such a big favor, but then I saw the shirts and cardigan, and well, I was just happy I asked her.

This linen spread collar had been on my radar for awhile. The color is actually a grayish-green and the leather piping detail is great.

This jersey shawl collar cardigan had my name written all over it. The marled weave of the cotton is a nice touch and adds texture. The pockets, throat latch, and buttons are all great details that take this cardigan away from plain old sweatshirt jersey.

I got another linen shirt as well. I really think linen is more than just a summer fabric-it’s the perfect layering piece as well. Lightweight and breathable, I inevitably end up wearing a linen shirt underneath a sweater or heavy tweed jacket in fall and winter.

I love the grosgrain detail on the underside of the placket. BEAMS always does a good job adding little things to set their pieces apart. This gingham will be in heavy rotation for a long time.

Can’t buy stuff from Japan and not get at least a few magazines. These four are my favorite of the countless available in Japan.

So there you have it. Although, as much as I love them, having my little sister back home is the best gift ever.

BEAMS Catalog

If you haven’t heard, my sister is back in town! On her way back, she stopped in Tokyo. Although she’s been to Osaka, this was her first in Tokyo. Being the good sister she is, she asked me if I wanted her to pick up anything. After telling her she had to check out Tokyu Hands, I sent her the superfuture city guide and asked her if she’d be willing to swing by BEAMS. She was, and she picked me up some great new stuff. Yeah, I’m the guy that asks his sister to pick up clothes and magazines when she’s  on the road back home again. First up, a few scans from the newest BEAMS catalog. I’ve had these Flat Head jeans for a almost a year and a half now. It may sound gross, but I’ve worn them almost exclusively for the whole time I’ve owned them. The Flat Head makes really amazing clothing and it will be hard not to simply buy another pair of the F310s when these get retired. I love these jeans. Yep. I said love. At this point they’re as comfortable as sweat pants and every time I go to get dressed, they always seem apropos. They are in need of a wash though. And the crotch has started the dreaded blow out. That and some tears in the cuffs (which I think is more due to never having uncuffed them for over a year) are the only major damage they’ve sustained. While I’m not the biggest fan of having a small hole in the crotch of my pants, it is a good reason for me to finally wash these things and send them off to Self Edge to get repaired. That’s right, 365 plus days of wear and no wash. I heard girls like guys who never wash their pants.

This is what happens when you leave really stiff denim cuffed for a year. And yes, that’s lint. Who knew stuff could collect in the cuff of your jeans? One day I hope to find a dollar or a long lost baseball card in there.

That booty pop I invested in is really paying off. Look at my wallet peeking out. Stay tuned for a post-wash review. I have a feeling a lot of the indigo will wash out-which means I’ll be in time for the washed jeans look that all those Italian guys are making popular again. Also, I want to wash them to soften them up even more. If you’re wondering, I’m just going to throw them in the washing machine on warm/lukewarm. Why not ritual soak in the bath tub? Because these guys need a good wash. While the washing machine can be really tough on your clothes, one wash a year probably won’t advance the aging process too far along.

stuff for your girl

Spring has arrived. Allegedly. Get her a jacket for the nice spring weather we’ve been having. Yoshi Kondo is a designer I first heard about through Lark. I love his designs for women. Simple, with great fabrics, and really nice subtle details. I haven’t met a girl who doesn’t look smashing in stripes. This jacket is perfect for that ferry ride you’ve been meaning to take her on.

Etsy is the jam. These 9mm shell earrings are perfect. Whether she’s a super tomboy or crazy girly, I’m comfortable saying that she will really like these. She probably likes Joy Division and knows that the Clipse’s Lord Willin’ is some of the Neptunes’ best work.

If you haven’t bought her a black dress yet, well, what are you waiting for? This United Bamboo drape dress from Lark is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. The skirt detail is spot on. The back draping will make that moment when she turns her head to look back at you as she walks across the party even that more memorable.

And it has pockets. Why don’t all dresses have pockets?

Visvim. Always been a huge fan of Mr. Nakamura. But like Band of Outsiders I think I like what he does for women even more. I don’t know what it is about girls that they can show up to dinner in a cape and we don’t even blink an eye. Instead, we notice the way she holds her fork and smiles when you refill her glass.

I love The Hill-Side and Hickoree’s Hard Goods. They’re good at everything a brand needs to be adept at. Marketing-the lookbooks are always inventive, show the product, and never take themselves too seriously. Presentation-I think the photo above speaks for itself. Product selection-can’t really beat the quirky selection that Hickoree’s offers. Who doesn’t like slingshots and chambray? When the Spring/Summer stuff was released, I knew I had to grab something. This season’s offerings are some of my favorites that The Hill-Side has done.

I went for the red cherry blossom print. I think we all know anything floral is going to be kind of like a big deal this year and I for one am all for it. A pocket square is a great way to introduce a little pattern and color to your jackets and vests. I think one of The Hill-Side’s strongest selling points is how they dye the fabric. The tone of the red is deep while allowing the crosshatches of the cotton twill to show, creating a nice subtle background for the cherry blossoms.

A little change of pace here. Everyone should have a few go to recipes in their back pocket. Surefire crowd pleasers, if you will. A good bolognese, steak, fried rice, and french fry recipe are all you need to win hearts and minds. Let’s start with one of my all time favorite foods- potatoes deep fried in oil. I have a few favorite cook books, but I generally get my recipes from good old google. I take the consensus of several different recipes and go from there. For french fries, it seems everybody from Emeril to that adorable flanneled couple in Portland says to boil the potatoes before you fry them. Then the debate as to double-fry or single fry. I went with double-frying my fries. I used this recipe as the starting point. Step one, peel and cut your potatoes. I’ll leave the final shape up to you.

Next, boil the sliced potatoes in water with a few tablespoons of distilled white vinegar and salt. Bring everything to a boil and let cook for around 10 minutes. Strain and pat dry. Repeat until all your potatoes have been boiled.

Now pull out your wok and pour in your preferred cooking oil. Just make sure it has a really high smoking point. So no olive oil.Bring the oil to a high heat-most say anywhere from 360-400 degrees Fahrenheit. The best tools for deep frying are the wire spoons you find at Asian grocery stores. Get yourself one. I think people call them spiders. Maybe not.

Once the oil is ready (if you’re not sure drop a piece of bread in the oil-if it crisps up and starts bubbling, the oil is ready) drop your fries in. Not all at once-you don’t want to drop the temperature. Fry them for a minute or two and pull them out and let them cool on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Once the fries are room temperature, drop them in the oil again. This time until they’re fully cooked-3-5 minutes.

I line a bowl with paper towel and just drop the fries in and serve. I do sprinkle sea salt as I take the fries from the oil to the bowl. And after a trip to The Spotted Pig, I realized fresh rosemary goes really well with french fries. Sprinkle some in along with your salt and you have a delicious snack. Or meal.
